EIGHTEEN

I R I S

“Iris,” a voice calls out to me. “Iris, dinner is ready!”

“Coming, mom.” I race down the hallway, my red curls flowing down my back. Today is Sunday, meaning tonight’s roasted chicken and mashed potatoes. Mom’s go-to end-of-weekend meal is my favorite dish in the whole world.

“Dex!” she calls out. “Dexter, come join us at the table.”

Dad walks into the kitchen, planting a kiss on my forehead as he takes a seat beside me.

“Here you go.” Mom places Dad’s dinner in front of him. She’s always been good that way, making sure we’re served and happy before she takes a seat.

“Thanks, hon.” He looks up at her in sheer adoration. We all do.

Mom is beautiful. She’s the most beautiful woman in the world. I love that we both have red hair. Mom tells me that red is the color of love. A love that she feels for me deeply, a love that she says she’s always felt from the moment she first met my dad.

Mom and Dad met in college, where they fell pregnant shortly after graduation—it wasn’t the most idealistic plan since Mom had big dreams of exploring life outside of New York City. But nonetheless, the universe had another plan—me.

Mom told me that she wanted to name me after a flower from the moment she found out she was pregnant. Therefore, when she saw Iris flowers growing outside the hospital where I was born, she knew it was perfect. Mom said she’d always envisioned me as a delicate little girl—but I’m far from it. I’m strong, resourceful, powerful, and very independent. So much so that I don’t like to be served my dinner. I want to serve myself.

Mom sits beside Dad, her fork planting straight into her mashed potatoes because she always eats carbs before protein. Dad and I are the opposite.

I scoop my food onto my plate, taking extra-long, considering a five-year-old only has so much talent with silverware.

“Iris, don’t forget your vegetables,” Dad remarks as I walk back to the table. He didn’t even need to look up to know that my plate had no carrots and peas.

Mom’s head stays down as I walk back to the oven and throw a few veggies on—just enough to satisfy Dad. He knows how picky of an eater I am.

Throughout dinner, we laugh, joke, and thank Mom for another amazing meal. I love my family. I’m certain I was given the best parents, life, and city in the world to be raised in. I truly couldn’t have asked for anything more.

After we’re finished eating, Mom collects our dinner plates and places them in the sink. “Wanna watch a movie?” Dad looks at me from across the table, gesturing to the living room.

“Yes!” I eagerly stand up from my chair. “Can we watch a superhero movie, Dad? Please?”

“Sure thing, my sweet girl.” He smiles, tucking in his chair and heading into the living room. “Let’s go!”

As I trail closely behind him, Mom calls out by the dishwasher. “Wait, Iris.
